Robert "Bob" Carroll Obituary

Robert Mark “Bob” Carroll, 79, North Manchester, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 29, 2024, at Stillwater Hospice in Fort Wayne. The son of the late Edson and Dorothy (Ludwig) Carroll, Bob was born June 3, 1944, in Huntington.

Bob was a member of the last graduating class from Urbana High School in 1962, where he excelled at Track and Field and was Vice President of his class. After graduation he began working for H&W Sand and Gravel, where he remained employed until his retirement in 2006. While the company’s name changed, Bob’s presence was constant. He worked out of Columbia City, Wabash, Peru, and Huntington during his tenure. He also served in the Indiana Army National Guard from 1965 to 1971. After retirement, Bob volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

On June 27, 1970, Bob married Ann Ulrey. The couple enjoyed many memorable times over the course of fifty-three years and shared two children, Tony and Renee. Bob was a loving father and husband who enjoyed going to his children’s events and later to those of his grandchildren as well. He also attended the Indy 500 race for fifty years. Bob was an outdoor enthusiast who relished in mushroom hunting, fishing with Tony, feeding the birds and other wildlife, taking walks through the woods, and gardening. He cut and split wood for over forty years in order to heat his and Ann’s home. He also loved to ride various motorcycles and enjoyed hunting in Wyoming with his family in his younger years. Family was paramount in Bob’s life; he loved being with them. He was welcoming, kind, hardworking, and led by example. Bob was faithful and true in everything he did, including his faith in the Lord. He was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church.

The loving memory of Robert “Bob” Carroll will be forever cherished by his wife, Ann Carroll, North Manchester; children, Tony (Brandy) Carroll, Winamac, and Renee (Brett) VanDeWoestyne, Geneseo, Illinois; and grandchildren, Alex (Kaylen) Overway, Josh Overway, Emily (Jake) Hawes, Zach (fiancée Jennifer) Overway, Nathan VanDeWoestyne, and Katie VanDeWoestyne. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene R. Carroll; and sister, Betty Wilcox.
