Marilyn "Jean" Stone

Marilyn “Jean” Stone, 90, North Manchester, Indiana passed away at 5:25 A.M. on November 18, 2017.  She was a patient at the Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Jean was born on August 29, 1927 to Galen and Mabel (McClintock) Kintner in Akron, Ohio.

Jean graduated from Wabash High School in 1945. After high school, she attended Manchester College for two years and finished at the Lutheran School of Nursing in 1950.  Jean married Donald Thomas Stone, of Lagro, Indiana, on May 27, 1951. The two were married for sixty years. Donald preceded her in death on July 5, 2011.

Jean spent her entire life in service to others.  She was wife, mother, grandma and g-gma. In her career, Jean was a registered nurse and an in-service education director at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru, Indiana, and a teacher at what was then called the Upper Wabash Vocational School (now Heartland Career Center) in Wabash, Indiana. Later, she served as a member of the Timbercrest Resident Board.

Jean’s passions were wide and varied, but her first passion was her large family.  As an extension of her love of family, Jean did extensive research, as an amateur genealogist, on the Stone and Troxel sides of her husband’s (Donald Stone’s) family tree.  Jean’s other passions included music (She played bassoon for two years with both the Manchester Symphony Orchestra and the Fort Wayne Symphony Orchestra.), reading, camping, traveling throughout the continental United States and Great Britain, completing crossword puzzles and talking with others.  She never met a stranger with whom she couldn’t find common ground.  She loved to hear their stories and as a consummate storyteller herself, she loved to share her own stories. Jean was well read, intelligent, intuitive, and articulate.  Within the family, a common statement was, “Call Grandma; she knows everything.”

Jean was a long-time, (former) active member and Deacon of the Peru Church of the Brethren, and was most recently a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren since moving to North Manchester in 1991. She was also a member of the Wabash County Genealogical Society, of the North Manchester Historical Society and of the Wabash County Retired Teachers’ Association. 

Marilyn “Jean” Stone is survived by two sons, Karl (Elaine) Stone, Medina, Ohio and Jon (Sandra) Stone, Emerald Isle, North Carolina; four daughters, Beverly (Charles) Malooley, Bloomington, Indiana; Kathryn (Charles) McCarty, Avon, Indiana; Edith Stone, North Manchester, Indiana; and Jill (Richard) Spenner, Roanoke, Indiana. She leaves behind twenty grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Stone, one brother, Gordon Kintner, and one child, Mary Elizabeth Stone.

Family and friends may call Wednesday, November 22, 2017 from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. at the Manchester Church of the Brethren, 1306 North Beckley Street, North Manchester, Indiana. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. at Manchester Church of the Brethren. Pastors Karen Eberly, Kurt Borgmann, and Jim Chinworth will officiate. Burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery, Corner of 500 East and 300 North, Lagro, Indiana.
