Benny Ray Bragg I

June 9, 1950 — January 13, 2026

North Manchester, Indiana

Benny Ray Bragg I, born on June 9, 1950, in Sarah Ann, West Virginia, to Herbert Hoover and Joyette (Chafin) Bragg, passed away on January 13, 2026, at the Autumn Ridge Rehabilitation Centre in Wabash, Indiana. Benny’s journey through life was marked by resilience and strength, as he faced the challenges brought on by polio, diagnosed when he was just 11 months old. Despite physical obstacles, Benny navigated life with unwavering determination, demonstrating an extraordinary spirit that inspired those around him.

In 1966 he, his parents, and siblings moved to the North Manchester area. Although enjoying life in North Manchester, a part of Benny always missed West by God Virginia. Benny went on to earn his certificate from a Small Engine Repair school; Benny applied his skills in a career dedicated to working with small engines. He also held positions at Singer Controls and Bryan Manufacturing in North Manchester.

Above all, family was paramount to Benny. He cherished every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. Family gatherings always brought back memories in West Virginia and joy of just being with family. Benny was known for his generous nature, often giving more than he had.

Benny was an outgoing individual who easily struck up conversations with anyone he met. He was straightforward in his approach, appreciated for his candidness and sincerity. His social life revolved around community, often spending time at the AMVETS in South Whitley and the Moose Lodge in North Manchester, where he was a valued member. Friday nights at the Moose were especially cherished, as he gathered with friends, sharing laughter and spirits.

In later years, Benny adapted to using a scooter, which did not dim his adventurous spirit. He found joy in riding through Liberty Mills, especially when taking his grandchildren on squirrel hunting excursions. Riding around with them perched on the front of his scooter, searching for squirrels in the trees, was a highlight during this time.

Although he did not belong to a specific church, Benny held his faith close to his heart, having been baptized.

The loving memory of Benny Ray Bragg I will be forever cherished by his children, Shawn (Michael) Hughes, Columbia City, Stacey (Roy) Shepherd, Claypool, and Benny (Michelle) Bragg II, Sandy Beach; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; his sister, Verdie Howard, Liberty Mills; and all the friends he made over the years. Benny was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jeretta Taylor; and brothers, Jerry, Johnny, and Roger Bragg.
