Calvin Clark Pugh

Calvin Clark Pugh, 92, of Duncanville, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, leaving behind a tapestry of cherished stories, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Known for his sharp wit, occasional recalcitrance, and severe aversion toward rushing into anything, Cal was a beloved husband, father, and friend whose presence enlivened every room he entered.

Born September 25, 1932, in Matthews, Missouri, to Deleon and Lillie Mae Pugh, Calvin grew up surrounded by a loving family. He was the eldest of nine siblings and is survived by brothers Alfred, Wallace, and Lorenzo, and sister Michelle Wren. He was preceded in death by sisters Maxine and Mae Audrey, and brothers Edward and Lyndell (and little Floyd).

Cal found his match in Diana Renee Warner, previously of North Manchester, his cherished and devoted wife of 48 years. Together, they built a warm and lively home, filled with laughter, companionship, and the joys and adventures of raising a family. Calvin is survived by Diana and children Wanakee Pugh, Parris Pugh, Tracy Holcombe, Jamaree Stokes, Ransom Pugh, and Katie Lee, who remain to celebrate his memory.

Calvin’s professional journey was marked by accomplishment and accolade. Having earned his master’s degree in psychiatric nursing, he dedicated over two decades of his life to the U.S. Army, retiring in 1988 as a full bird Colonel. Beyond his military career, Cal was known for his confident self-reliance, his legendary sense of humor, and his colorful tales. As a storyteller, he held audiences spellbound, while the flames of his competitive fire – forged primarily during family board games or repeat performances of his “You Are Wrong” song – reminded all that Cal loved two things: to win and to be right. Whether recounting his unlikely victory racing a tornado or boasting of his “distinguished” 1-0 basketball record, the twinkle in his eye during his accounts of his most entertaining chronicles was nearly as bright as the smiles on the faces of those fortunate enough to find themselves privy to the telling.

A consummate and ‘CHAMPINE’ homebody at heart, there were few things Calvin loved to do more than watch movies or cook. Gunsmoke, Star Trek, LA Law, and Survivor could keep him fully entertained and satisfied for a lifetime (and indeed they did), and his mac’n’cheese, gumbo, cornbread dressing, and banana pudding (to name a few) have no rivals in this world, while his “5-Alarm Chili” was the pride (and terror) of many a church event. But as much as he loved to stay in (he would’ve missed his own wedding if he could have), Cal had a sociability that would shine whenever he chose to reveal it. Whether with family and friends or in the checkout line at Big Lots, the man never knew a stranger as long as he lived.

Stubborn, vibrant, and dearly loved, Calvin Clark Pugh’s laughter will echo in the hearts of all those who share in the pain of his loss, and the stories he left behind will endure through those who knew him – each remembrance bringing a smile, a tear, and the memory of a life well-lived and a man well-loved. He will be deeply missed.

A private graveside service will be held on at Union Lutheran Cemetery in Zionsville, IN.
