North Manchester, Indiana

Carolyn K. Crist, a devoted community member and cherished individual, passed away on April 1, 2026, at the Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester, Indiana. Born on February 24, 1943, in North Manchester, to George F. and Hazel M (Baker) Coon, Carolyn’s life was marked by a genuine commitment to service, education, and the well-being of others.

A proud graduate of Manchester High School in 1961, Carolyn continued her education at Purdue University, laying the foundation for a life dedicated to learning and support. Her professional career reflected this dedication. She began as a nurse’s aide at Miller's Merry Manor from 1975 to 1983, providing compassionate care to those in need. Later, she worked at Heckman Bindery from 1985 to 2004, contributing her diligence and skill for nearly two decades. Carolyn also served at Lance's New Market from 1999 to 2004, and most notably, she was a receptionist and tutor at the Learn More Center in North Manchester, where she helped adults pursue their GEDs, empowering many to achieve their educational goals.

Beyond her work, Carolyn was known for her generous spirit and tireless volunteer efforts. She was deeply involved with Relay for Life and the Wabash County Cancer Society, through which she created hundreds of pink ribbons as symbols of cancer remembrance and hope. Her compassionate outreach and creative efforts left a lasting impact on the community she loved.

Carolyn was united in marriage to Clifford E. Crist on November 21, 1999. Though their time together was brief due to Clifford’s passing on March 10, 2000, their bond remained a cherished chapter of her life.

In her personal time, Carolyn enjoyed reading, especially works by Danielle Steel, engaging in crosswords and word searches, and watching television game shows and the classic series, The Andy Griffith Show. Her involvement in the Order of Eastern Star, Ivy Chapter #69, highlighted her commitment to fellowship and shared purpose within her community. Her faith was always an important aspect of her life. She was baptized in 1954 at the Manchester Church of the Brethren, then attended New Journey in Wabash, before going to Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren.

The loving memory of Carolyn Crist will be forever cherished by her daughter, Jennifer (fiancé Jessie Burkhart) Young, Muncie, Indiana; grandchildren, Michael Keaffaber and Felicia (Austin Johnston) Keaffaber; and the many lives she touched throughout her life. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford E. Crist; and brothers, Thomas L. Coon and George “Ted” Coon.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 997 West State Road 114, North Manchester, Indiana, with Pastor Erin Huiras officiating.

For those who wish to honor the memory of Carolyn Crist, memorial contributions may be made to the Learn More Center, 1100 Cass Street, Wabash, Indiana 46992.
