Charlene Gray, born on June 2, 1956, in Wabash, Indiana, to Vernal and Margie Hackworth, went home to be with the Lord on July 25, 2025. She passed away at Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester, surrounded by her loving family. Charlene was a devoted mother, grandmother, whose life was marked by her unwavering faith and dedication to family.
Charlene graduated from Manchester High School in 1974, embarking on a life journey that would lead her through various roles. Initially, she embraced the demanding role of a stay-at-home mother until her children were older. Her career began at Heckman Bindery, before she became an operator at Dexter Axle. Later, Charlene found fulfillment as a caretaker and house cleaner for an assisted living facility in Warsaw. After years of dedicated service, she retired in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and service to others.
At the core of Charlene's existence was her deep faith. She was a devoted member of the Wabash Bible Holiness Church, where she found comfort and strength in her beliefs. Her daily routine included reading the Bible, a practice that illustrated her commitment to her spiritual life. As a mother, she instilled strong values in her children, raising them in a strict yet loving Christian household. Charlene often expressed her protectiveness over her family, ensuring they had everything they needed.
Charlene's love extended beyond her immediate family; her grandchildren held a particularly special place in her heart, bringing her immense joy and pride. Known for her engaging personality, she loved conversing with people over the phone. In her younger years, her exceptional cooking skills delighted those around her. She found pleasure in simple pursuits such as word searches and reading, reflecting her thoughtful nature. Though she tended to keep to herself, her kindness and care were felt by all who knew her.
The loving memory of Charlene Gray will be forever cherished by her children, Heather Gomez, North Manchester, Gary (Nicole) Gray, North Canton, Ohio, and Candy Diaz, Warsaw; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, with two on the way; brother, Vernal E. (Diana) Hackworth, Batesville; sisters, Eilene (William) Prater, Silver Lake and Lorraine (Bruce) Bradley, New Jersey. Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ronnie Hackworth; and sister, Elaine Hackworth.
Family and friends may call Wednesday, July 30, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Indiana 46962. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling with Pastor Titus Stracener officiating. Burial will be held at South Pleasant Cemetery, Silver Lake, Indiana.
