Charles V. Craig

July 16, 1927 — October 20, 2023

Huntington formermly of North Manchester

Charles V. Craig, 96, Huntington and formerly of North Manchester, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2023, surrounded by his three loving daughters. Born in Paris, Illinois, on July 16, 1927, Charlie was the son of Orral E. and Bernice (Chesrown) Craig.

Charlie left school in 1944 to join the United States Navy, He served in Guam during WWII where he pilfered a parachute, stuffed it in his peacoat, and sent it home. The parachute was made into a wedding dress by Charles’s soon-to-be mother-in-law for the love of his life, Mildred J. Reeley. After returning home from duty, Charlie went back to school and earned his diploma. He continued supporting the military and became a member of the Paris American Legion Post 211 in Paris, Illinois.  Charlie and Mildred were united in marriage on July 20, 1947, and were blessed with three daughters who he affectionately referred to as his own Charlie’s Angels. Charlie attended the First Brethren Church in North Manchester after he and his family relocated. He enjoyed his time as a Ham Operator for a period of time.

For over thirty years Charlie worked at General Telephone to support his family, but it was memories made outside of work that made Charles’s life complete. He delighted in spending time with his family and enjoyed camping with them and square dancing with his wife. He was a good man who enjoyed helping others and was a Scoutmaster for many years, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1972. Charlie loved a good laugh and never hesitated to play pranks on family and friends. He liked to birdwatch and could discern birds by their calls. After Mildred passed away on September 26, 2012, Charlie was reminded of her every time he saw a hummingbird.

The loving memory of Charles V. Craig will be forever cherished by his angels, Charlotte (Pete) Ruch, North Manchester, E.
