Born on May 3, 1936, in Mogadore, Ohio, to Elden M. and Ruth L. (Beardshaw) Petry, Charles lived a life marked by dedication, passion, and a deep love for his family and the Lord.
Charles graduated from Anderson High School in 1954, setting the foundation for a lifetime of varied and impactful careers. He attended Manchester College, and he began dating Brenda Whitcraft when he met her at his father's revival meeting. Their love blossomed, and on July 12, 1959, they were united in marriage. Together, they shared sixty-six years filled with love, partnership, and the joy of raising three children.
Charles began his professional journey as a Church of the Brethren Minister, reflecting his unshakable faith and commitment to service. His vocational path led him to the automotive industry, a field that ignited his passion. Throughout his career in this sector, he held multiple roles, from mechanic, to manager, to business owner, demonstrating leadership and expertise. His abilities extended further as he took on the role of roundhouse foreman at Burlington Northern Railroad. Charles continued to diversify his work experience with ventures into RV sales, maintenance, and insurance sales.
Beyond his professional achievements, Charles was a man of remarkable talents and interests. He had booming speaking and singing voice, often blessing those around him with gospel music that honored his faith. He had a sharp understanding of mechanics, whether it was automobiles, trains, or home repairs. His hearty laugh and great sense of humor brought warmth and lightheartedness to his family and friends’ lives. Above all, Charles loved the Lord with all his heart and joyfully engaged in reading and teaching the Christian faith. On Sundays, he would worship at Oak Park Community Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was a member.
Charles’s legacy is that of a generous and loving man who prioritized his family and faith above all else. He will be remembered fondly for his kind spirit, his unwavering devotion, and the joyful energy he shared with those who had the privilege of knowing him.
