Herbert Devon Gunter, a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and accomplished businessman, passed away on November 20, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born on December 18, 1945, in Warsaw, Indiana, to Elmer and Thelda Mae (Wise) Gunter, he lived a life characterized by hard work, creativity, and a deep commitment to his family.
Herb graduated from Claypool High School in 1964 before serving his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968. Upon returning home, he embarked on a career that would see him leave an indelible mark on his community. For forty-seven years, Herb owned and operated Eel River Steelworks in North Manchester, where he excelled as a welder and fabricator. Known for being a tough but fair boss, he was a mentor to many, instilling in them the values of honesty, dedication, and work ethic. Herb’s passion for his craft and his creative visionary spirit allowed him to transform ideas into reality, earning him the respect and admiration of those who worked alongside him.
On May 27, 1966, Herb married Virginia "Jenny" Bumgardner. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and laughter, raising two sons, Jeffrey and Jeremy. Herb's commitment to family was unwavering, and he took immense joy in his role as a father and grandfather. He was an honest and hardworking man who fostered a nurturing home environment while also enjoying the lighter side of life, often seeking out moments of fun and laughter with those he loved.
Herb was deeply respectful, particularly towards women, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was an avid supporter of Indiana University sports, proudly cheering on the teams that captured his heart. A man who cherished communication, he valued conversations that allowed him to listen and learn from others.
Herb and Virginia attended the Congregational Christian Church while actively participating in their community and sharing in fellowship with friends.
The loving memory of Herbert Devon Gunter will be forever cherished by his wife, Virginia “Jenny” Gunter, North Manchester; son, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Gunter, Southeast, Minnesota; brother, Marvin (Judy) Gunter, Warsaw; daughter-in-law, Katie (Gunter) Stout; and grandchildren, Nathaniel Gunter, Nicholas Gunter, and Jocelyn Gunter, as well as honorary grandchildren, Andrew and Cooper Stout. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeremy Gunter; brothers, Doyle, Gordon, Richard, Kenneth, and Donald Gunter; sister, Eva Gunter; and grandson, Elijah Gunter.
Family and friends may call Tuesday, November 25, 2025 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Indiana. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with calling beginning at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Servia, Indiana.
