John Olinger, a beloved figure in the North Manchester community, passed away on October 20, 2024 at the Autumn Ridge Rehabilitation Centre in Wabash, Indiana. Born on April 1, 1955, in Huntington, Indiana, to Frederick “Fritz” and Rose Mary (Berneburg) Olinger, John led a life filled with passion, laughter, and a commitment to both his community and his faith.

As the owner and operator of Oak Park Lanes, John's legacy as a bowling alley operator went beyond mere business. For many years, his establishment was more than a venue for strikes and spares; it was a hub of community engagement. John had a unique gift for teaching others the art of bowling, and he worked closely with the local high school, even allowing them to hold P.E. classes at his lanes. His dedication inspired countless students to develop a love for the game, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.

Education was an important aspect of John's life. He earned his bachelor's degree from Manchester College in 1977, following his graduation from Manchester High School in 1973. His academic journey shaped his character, instilling in him the values of hard work and perseverance that he would carry throughout his life.

John was not just known for his contributions to the bowling community; he was celebrated for his vibrant personality. He was a man of faith, a devoted Catholic, and a cherished member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in North Manchester. His unwavering belief nurtured not only his own soul but also those of countless others who found solace and strength through his words and actions. His laughter was a melody that harmonized with the simple joys of life, whether it was a shared joke or a deep discussion about faith and values.

The loving memory of John Olinger will be forever cherished by his brothers, Noel (Ann Marie) Olinger, Conway, South Carolina and Anthony “Tony” (Tricia) Olinger, Lafayette; sisters, Mary Carter, Cincinnati, Ohio, Julie (Dean) Wendel, South Whitley and Clare Dials,, Peru; numerous nieces and nephews; friends, Gee-Gee Tharp and Richard Brown, both of North Manchester. John was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Frederick “Fred” Olinger, Timothy “Tim” Olinger, and Christopher Olinger.

A funeral Mass will be held on October 30, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., with praying of the Rosary beginning at 9:30 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 1203 State Road 114, North Manchester, Indiana, with Father Jay Horning officiating. A private burial will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery, 600 Beckley Street, North Manchester, Indiana, at a later date.
