Julia M. Hoover

September 9, 1928 — September 13, 2025

North Manchester, Indiana

Julia Hoover, a beloved member of the North Manchester community, was born on September 9, 1928, in Akron, Indiana, to Lewis and Margret (Smoker) Slaybaugh. Julia cherished her childhood, filled with joyful memories made while visiting her cousins and participating in family reunions. She embraced life with her neighborhood friends, enjoying roller skating, wiener roasts, and campfires. After completing her studies, Julia graduated from Akron High School in 1946.

Upon graduation, she began her career at the Akron Bank, where she worked for three years. In 1948, her life took a serendipitous turn during a blind date with a cousin and his friend to the movies in Peru, Indiana. That night, she met Homer Hoover from North Manchester, who would become the love of her life. The couple married on November 26, 1949, at the Akron Church of God. They welcomed their first son shortly after marriage and spent the next 47 years at their home on West Main Street in North Manchester before moving to Timbercrest in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.

As a dedicated mother, Julia created countless memories with her children, engaging in activities such as ping-pong, golf, and bicycle rides. Her adventurous spirit led the family to travel extensively, exploring much of the United States and Canada, including cherished trips to California and Florida, always camping along the way. Among her favorite destinations were Hawaii and the breathtaking Rocky Mountains.

While Julia took pride in being a homemaker, she also balanced family responsibilities with various jobs while her children were in school, which included positions at Heckman Bindery, Burger Chef, and as Assistant Residence Manager in the Peabody dining room.

Julia's passions extended beyond her family life; she found joy in roller skating, biking, and camping. She was also an artist, engaging in painting and various crafts. A devoted gardener, Julia took pleasure in nurturing beautiful flowers and was an avid reader. She was actively involved in her community, belonging to the Timbercrest Auxiliary and serving as Financial Secretary at the West Manchester Church of the Brethren, where she contributed to various church committees.

The loving memory of Julia Hoover will forever be cherished by her sons, Michael (Pamela) Hoover, North Manchester and Dr. Rick (Elaine) Hoover, South Bend; daughter, Patti (Romeo) Benzon, Kapolei Oahu, Hawaii; grandchildren, Natalie Hoover, Alex Hoover, Elise Racette, and Jessica Berlin; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Georgeanna Slaybaugh, Nashville, Indiana. Julia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Homer Hoover; brothers, Richard “Rich” and Jack Slaybaugh; and sister-in-law, Beth Slaybaugh.
