Luther Allen Barefoot

Luther Allen Barefoot, affectionately known as "Bare," passed away at his home in Liberty Mills, Indiana, on July 21, 2026. Born on November 5, 1933, in Alum Bank, Pennsylvania, to William Robert and Elsie (Bowser) Barefoot, Allen lived a life dedicated to hard work, family, faith, and community.

Allen graduated from Schellsburg-Napier High School in 1951, laying the foundation for his lifelong commitment to craftsmanship and integrity. On February 14, 1954, he married Betty Jane Butler, and together they embarked on a journey marked by partnership and shared dreams. Early in their marriage, Allen was brought to North Manchester, Indiana, contracted by Frantz Lumber during the construction of Manchester High School. After completing this significant project, Allen and Betty Jane returned briefly to Pennsylvania before settling permanently in the North Manchester area—a place that would become the heart of his life’s work and legacy.

Allen devoted his life to the art of masonry, striving always for perfection in each project he undertook. Through his business, Tri-State Masonry, he shaped not only buildings but also memories, leaving lasting marks across the region—including prominent work on Manchester High School, Manchester College, and Salamonie. Known for his hallmark touch, it was not uncommon to find his initials or the quiet imprint of a maple leaf discreetly set in the corners of his work—a testament to his pride in his craft. He extended a helping hand to many neighbors and friends, addressing their concrete needs with skill.

Beyond his trade, Allen contributed deeply to the spiritual and social fabric of his community. A long-standing member of Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, he played music during Sunday services, served as Trustee for many years, and was always ready to lend his talents to maintain and repair the church grounds.

After the passing of Betty Jane on July 7, 1985, Allen found companionship once more with Nancy (Moore) Weaver. They were married on October 28, 1985, and together enjoyed winters spent between Pennsylvania and Texas. Allen’s passion for music was evident; he could play and repair any stringed instrument.

A lover of the outdoors, Allen relished time spent hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and riding his Gold Wing motorcycle. He was a devoted member of the Izaak Walton League since 1972, holding various offices and championing conservation. The spirit of adventure ran in his veins—during the 1970s, he created cherished memories by converting a bus into a camper, traveling with loved ones to places as varied as Michigan, Wyoming, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Canada.

The loving memory of Allen Barefoot will be forever cherished by his wife, Nancy Barefoot, Liberty Mills; children, Robert Paul (Barbara) Barefoot, David Barefoot, and Martha (Rick) Music, all of North Manchester, Mark (Jean) Barefoot, Port Lavaca, Texas, Annette (Bill) Taylor, Bedford, Pennsylvania, and Christine (Donnie) Morris, Schellsburg Pennsylvania; sister, Agnes Ann Lohman, Winona Lake; thirteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Jane Barefoot; son, Timothy Barefoot; brother, Lowell Barefoot; and two grandchildren, Kyle Music and Alex Morris.

Family and friends may call Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, 103 North 3rd Street, Liberty Mills, Indiana. A celebration of Allen’s life will begin at the conclusion of calling with Pastor Erin Huiras officiating.
