Mander Lee Prater, a dedicated youth minister and beloved community member, passed away on June 27, 2025, in Peru, Indiana, at the age of 64. Born on August 29, 1960, in Warsaw, Indiana, to Mander E. and Janavee “Jan” (Flannery) Prater, Mander's life was characterized by his unwavering commitment to helping others and his profound sense of community.
After graduating from Northfield High School in 1978, Mander pursued his education in electrical engineering at ITT. His academic journey continued at Ivy Tech Community College, where he studied computer graphics (CAD). Ultimately, his passion for guiding youth led him to Taylor University, where he graduated in 2001 with a degree in Youth Ministry.
Mander's career as a youth minister began in 1988 at New Life Baptist Church in Wabash, where he served until 1999. He then joined Calvary Baptist Church in Wabash and continued his impactful work there until 2006, when he assumed the role of Mission Director at EastPointe Bible Church in Peru. Throughout his ministry, Mander touched the lives of countless young people with his warmth, guidance, and unwavering dedication to their growth.
A proud veteran, Mander served in the United States Army from 1983 to 1987 as an M1 Abrams Tank System Mechanic. His military service was a source of pride and commitment to his family, country, and community.
Mander married Luan K. Rowe on June 7, 1980, after meeting while they were both in college. They shared a joyful life together, filled with laughter and cherished memories, and were the proud parents of six children. Mander's family was the cornerstone of his life, and he always put their needs first, embodying a spirit of selflessness and love.
Known for his generous heart and ornery personality, Mander was someone who would give more than he could afford, always putting others' needs above his own. His presence was felt deeply, and he had a dream of making a lasting difference in the lives of those around him.
The loving memory of Mander Lee Prater will be forever cherished by his father, Mander E. Prater, Roann; wife, Luan K. Prater, Roann; children, Heather (Jason) George, Wapak, Ohio, Phillip (Andrea) Prater, Spring Lake, Michigan, Stephanie (Micah) Archer, Roann, Anton Prater, Kentucky, Polina Prater, Frankfort, Germany, and Ekaterina (Cameron) Rose, Wabash; eight grandchildren; brother, Jeff (Kristi) Prater, Silver Lake; and sisters, Vanessa (JC) Sparks, Warsaw and Jill (Paul) Parker, Akron. Mander was preceded in death by his mother, Janavee “Jan” Prater; and grandchild, Amara George.
Family and friends may call Monday, July 7, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Indiana. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling. Burial will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Claypool, Indiana.
