Mary Cornelia Harden, née Luther, born on November 2, 1938, in Norwood, North Carolina, to Enos Monroe and Violet (Shue) Luther, passed away at her home in Wabash, Indiana, on June 9, 2026. She was a beloved figure whose life was marked by dedication to family and the simple joys of life.
Mary spent much of her life as a devoted homemaker, nurturing her household with care and warmth. Alongside this role, she pursued a career at Hang Ups Ladies Shop in Wabash for many years, where her presence was both appreciated and respected. A graduate of Wright Beauty Academy, Mary’s skills extended beyond being a hairstylist and homemaking, reflecting her versatile talents and commitment to whatever endeavors she undertook.
On January 5, 1956, Mary married Terry Harden in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Their union was a cornerstone of her life until Terry’s passing on May 18, 2021. Together they shared four children.
Mary's contributions to her community were substantial and noteworthy. She was an active member of the Wabash American Legion Auxiliary for over three decades, illustrating her unwavering support and service. Additionally, she found fellowship and spiritual sustenance as a member of the Friends Church in Wabash. Beyond formal gatherings, Mary enjoyed social outings, often going out to eat with her friends after church.
Her interests were as diverse as her commitments. Mary delighted in mushroom hunting, a peaceful pursuit that connected her with nature. She also cherished doing her family’s hair, a personal expression of care and affection. Above all, her greatest happiness lay with her family, especially her grandchildren, for whom her love was boundless. Known for her selflessness, Mary was always eager to be surrounded by people, her presence lifting spirits and creating warmth.
Mary’s creativity and intellect found outlets in sewing and solving word puzzles, activities that reflected her meticulous nature and thoughtful mind. Hosting family members brought her immense joy, reinforcing the central role that kinship played in her life.
The loving memory of Mary Harden will be forever cherished by her son, Clint (Honi) Harden, Wabash; grandchildren, Jennifer (Gary) Werner, Amy (Rob) Coburn, Addi Harden, Olivia Harden, Wyatt Harden, Elias Harden, Johnathon Harden, and Stuart (Samantha) Harden; two great-grandchildren, Asher and Kaydence Harden. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Terry Harden; sons, Leon, Darrel, and Terry Harden Jr.; brother, Carl “Bubb” Luther; and sisters, Martha Vick, Bertha Mae Laviner, and Lorraine Wencil.
There will be a celebration of Mary’s life at the Friends Church in Wabash at a later date.
