Phyllis Marie Burkett, affectionately known by those who loved her as a straightforward and vibrant soul, passed away on February 14, 2026, at DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn, Indiana. Born on October 27, 1935, in North Judson, Indiana, to Delbert and Leah (Bailey) Hunnicutt, she was the oldest daughter in a large family of nine, a role that shaped her nurturing nature and her desire to guide and support those around her.
Phyllis married Cecil Rollin Burkett on June 20, 1953. Together, they created a loving family, welcoming two sons, Tim and Norman. Their journey through life was marked by an adventurous spirit, delighting in travels across the United States. Their bond was further enriched by the joy of family gatherings, laughter, and shared experiences.
Phyllis dedicated many years of her life to her career at Heckman Bindery in North Manchester, where her hard work and diligence were valued. She was known for her candidness, never hesitating to voice her opinion, a quality that endeared her to many.
In her free time, Phyllis embraced the beauty of nature, often engaging in mushroom hunting, a pastime that brought her peace and enjoyment. She also had a passion for auto racing, where she found thrill and excitement. Above all, her greatest joy was found in the company of her grandchildren, for whom she was a steadfast and loving presence.
The loving memory of Phyllis Burkett will be forever cherished by her son, Tim (Amy) Burkett, Fort Wayne; brother, David (Matt) Hunnicutt, Bass Lake; sisters, Ruth Hanselman, Culver and Olive (Tony) Fisher, Plymouth; grandchildren, Travise, Tim Jr., Terry, Emily, Nora, Logan, Claire, and Cayden; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; daughter-in-law, Therese Burkett, Fort Wayne. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil Burkett; son, Norman Burkett; brothers, Harry, James, Norman, Forest, and Walter Hunnicutt.
Family and friends may call Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Indiana. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling with Adam Kennedy officiating. Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Servia, Indiana.
