Tim R. Hoffman, born September 10, 1924, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to Milton and Frieda (Ripple) Hoffman, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center in North Manchester, Indiana. His remarkable journey of over a century touched countless lives through service, friendship, and deeds marked by warmth and dedication.
Tim’s early years were shaped in Windber, Pennsylvania, where he completed his secondary education in 1942. A multi-talented student, he immersed himself in high school band and orchestra. Following graduation, Tim attended Manchester College from 1942 to 1943. The world soon called him to serve: he enlisted first in the Navy and later in the Marines, serving courageously in a medical unit stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, Tim resumed his studies at Manchester College from 1946 to 1948, earning his BA in Chemistry. Later, in 1951, he completed his MA in Administration from Ball State University— a testament to his enduring passion for learning and personal growth.
Tim’s love story began in 1946 when he met Jean Backus at Manchester University. Their union was celebrated via marriage on August 14, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio. Together, they welcomed two children into their lives and embraced the joy of travel as a family.
The arc of Tim’s professional life was defined by dedication and a desire to help others reach their potential. He began as a schoolteacher, laying the groundwork for a career devoted to human development. For the next thirty-one years, Tim worked with General Motors, rising to Assistant Director of Management Development. During his time, he and Jean lived in Dayton, Ohio; Richmond, Indiana; and Orchard Lake, Flushing, Farmington Hills and Stanwood, Michigan. Upon retiring from General Motors, he continued to mentor as a consultant for nine additional years.
In 1999, Tim and Jean moved to Timbercrest, embarking on a new chapter together. Jean preceded him in death on July 29, 2000. Tim later found renewed companionship with Roberta (Guthrie) Dickey, an old classmate. Their marriage on December 8, 2001, in Flushing, Michigan, brought Tim much happiness, and they shared many meaningful years together until Roberta’s passing on August 25, 2017.
Tim’s passions outside of work were many. He crafted beauty with stained glass, nurtured flower gardens, played golf, and cherished time spent reading. His sense of service extended to his community: among numerous organizations, he gave his time to Meals on Wheels, served as a devoted member of Rotary International, Manchester College Community Club, Shepherds Center, Firecracker Golf League, and on the Manchester Symphony Board. His faith anchored him, and at Manchester Church of the Brethren, he was present not only as a congregant but as an active leader across various roles. Tim also enjoyed traveling, and he visited all fifty states and eighteen countries; among these, Egypt and Michigan held special places in his heart.
The loving memory of Tim R. Hoffman will be forever cherished by his children, Brian (Linda) Hoffman, Clermont, Florida, and Holly (Patrick) Franko, Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held in September in Clermont, Florida.
For those who wish to honor the memory of Tim R. Hoffman, memorial contributions may be made to Timbercrest Charitable Assistance Fund, P.O. Box 501, North Manchester, Indiana 46962 or the Manchester Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 113, North Manchester, Indiana 46962.
