Angilee (Miller) Beery

Angilee Miller Beery, age 79, of North Manchester, died on Friday, August 20, 2021, following a recent diagnosis of advanced gastric cancer. 

Angilee was born December 15, 1941, in Middlebury, Indiana, and lived in North Manchester continuously beginning in 1965. She graduated from Manchester College in 1963 with a degree in Elementary Education and later earned a Master of Science degree in Education from Saint Francis College. Angilee taught elementary school in Manchester Community Schools for 41 years, retiring in 2009. After retirement, she continued to work part-time as a dining room hostess at Timbercrest Retirement Community, where she was beloved by residents and staff. She also volunteered for several years in an elementary classroom supporting students with math and reading. A voracious reader herself, she was a member of several local book groups. 

A long-time member of Manchester Church of the Brethren, Angilee led Sunday School and volunteered on numerous committees. She served on the board of the Manchester Early Learning Center and was invested in its success. A loyal patron of local shops and farmers, she believed in supporting businesses that put people and the community first. 

An avid and talented quilter, Angilee was a member of the quilt clubs Creative Threaders and Sew Much Fun, and she looked forward to Camp Mack Quilt Retreats for sewing and fellowship. During the pandemic, she sewed hundreds of masks for family, friends, schools, and other organizations. Recently, she bought sewing supplies for a widows’ group in Malawi, Africa.

Angilee cherished visits with her family and enjoyed sharing her skills as a baker, sewer, reader, and gardener with her children and grandchildren. She cultivated and nurtured close realationships with friends, relatives, and college classmates, traveling near and far to visit, dine, and adventure together. Over several decades Angilee supported the operations of Beery Farms by delivering meals to the fields and helping transport people and vehicles from farm to farm. 

Angilee survived multiple cancer diagnoses beginning in 1994, facing health challenges with grit and courage. She reciprocated the kindness of others by generously supporting family and friends who faced complications of their own.   

Angilee was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Harold W. Miller, and by her mother, Louise Reed Miller. She is survived by her brother Kenneth Miller (Zelba) of Chesterton, her husband, Leland Beery of North Manchester, son Robin Beery (Sonya Yoder-Beery) of Indianapolis, son Gary Beery (Angela Rogers) of Palo Alto, CA, daughter Alyson Beery (Neil Westendorf) of Leadville, CO, and grandchildren Ruth and Hazel, Margaret and Caroline, and Sylas and Camilla. She leaves behind many beloved relatives, friends, and former students who will miss her generosity, energy, passion for learning, and love of life. 

Family and friends may call Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Manchester Church of the Brethren, 1306 Beckley Street, North Manchester, Indiana. A celebration of life service will be held at the conclusion of calling on April 9, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. Pastors Kurt Borgmann and Amy Gall Ritchie will officiate.

The family of Angilee Beery has entrusted McKee Mortuary with care and final arrangements.
